Working out at home is not only convenient, it can also be highly effective. While we’re conditioned to think that you need to spend hours on a treadmill or squat hundreds of pounds at the gym in order to see big results, the fact of the matter is that you can achieve many of your fitness goals right in the comfort of your own home. However, if you’re not used to exercising regularly or you’ve never tried to work out on your own at home, you may not know where to start. Online fitness communities like Body FX offer a ton of great resources like hundreds of hours of streaming workouts, personalized coaching and nutritional advice, and the opportunity to connect with others looking to get fit and lose weight. Developing a workout routine doesn’t have to be scary, and you don’t have to do it alone. Here are five fun facts about workout routines at home that you may not have thought about!

#1 You’re Only As Alone As You Choose to Be

For people who struggle with motivation or who don’t enjoy exercising, working out at home might seem unrealistic. After all, what are the chances of you getting your workout in if no one is forcing you to do so? With technology constantly changing and evolving, the reality is that you are only as alone as you choose to be. Some people may prefer a long run on the treadmill while watching their favorite show, while others may choose to stream a workout video to feel like they’re part of a fitness class. Some online fitness communities even offer live streaming workout options so that you can participate in a workout at the same time as thousands of other people around the world, including the instructor and participants in the studio. If developing a home workout routine feels overwhelming, consider joining an online fitness community that offers personal coaching and has a large database of streaming workouts to choose from. You’ll be able to mix up the type of workout you do each day so that you don’t get bored and you see big results from constantly keeping your muscles guessing.

#2 Anyone Can Workout at Home

Workout routines at home can be accessible to everyone, no matter what your fitness level. Those who are mostly sedentary or don’t have a lot of experience exercising may feel like they need more guidance than working out at home seems to offer, but there are lots of options for a home workout program. The first step towards starting your own workout routine at home, regardless of how much you currently exercise,  is to evaluate your current fitness level. Try these simple tests to figure out your current level of fitness and set a starting point against which to assess progress. 

  • Check your resting heart rate before you workout by counting the number of times your heart beats in 60 seconds. Then, go for a brisk 10-minute walk to warm-up and check it again when you’re done. Write both numbers down.
  • Evaluate your endurance by timing how long it takes you to walk one mile. If you’re not ready to walk a mile, time how long it takes you to walk half a mile, or to the end of your driveway, or to the other side of the room – whatever is appropriate for your current level of fitness. 
  • To test your strength, count how many pushups you can do (standard or on your knees) before needing to take a break. It’s ok if you can’t do any! Pushups can also be done upright with your hands pressed against the wall and your feet several feet away from the baseboard, lowering your body towards the wall and pressing back up.
  • To gauge your flexibility, lean forward and see how far you can reach towards your toes while seated on the floor with your legs out in front of you.

After you establish your current fitness level, take measurements of body parts like the circumference of your bicep, thigh, hips, calves, and glutes. If progress pictures motivate you, take some “before” shots! 

#3 You Don’t Necessarily Need Equipment

Having access to a gym is great, but if you never have time or motivation to go, it’s not very helpful. Still, many people think that workout routines at home won’t yield the same results as the workout you’d get in a gym. While that might be true for athletes performing at a high level, most people can get an effective workout that will help them reach their goals right in the comfort of their own homes. Depending on what type of workouts you’d like to do and what your goals are,  you may not need any more equipment than a good pair of running or walking shoes and some moisture-wicking workout clothes. For example, dance is an incredibly effective total body workout that you can do from home without any equipment besides good shoes and comfortable clothes, and it’s fun! No matter what your fitness level or your musical preference, you’ll find hundreds of dance workout video options from online fitness communities like Body FX. It’s not quite Dancing with the Stars, but you’ll get a great workout without leaving your living room.

You can also do an entire full body circuit workout using only bodyweight exercises, including movements like squats, pushups, sit ups, and tricep dips. If you decide that you’d like to incorporate weight training or ratchet up the intensity of certain movements, however, it may be worth adding multi-functional equipment to add to your home gym, including a yoga mat, dumbbells in a variety of weights, a stability ball for core exercises, and resistance bands. Bonus points if you have access to a cardio machine like a treadmill or elliptical, or you have access to a set of barbells, but neither is required to see big results.

#4 There are Lots of Workout Options

Working out at home doesn’t have to be boring, and you don’t have to do the same DVD over and over again. There are tons of options for workout routines at home, including:

  • Dance: Dancing brings out our inner child, but it also burns serious calories. With a huge variety of online dance workout options, you can try anything from BodyFX to Zumba to belly dancing, hip hop, line dancing, and more. There’s sure to be a video that’s right for your fitness level and your musical taste.
  • Cardiovascular conditioning: Walking or running for 20 to 30 minutes four to five times a week is one of the simplest ways to start working out at home. Start slowly and try and keep your pace at a “conversational” level, meaning you can carry on a conversation while doing your workout. Even if you don’t have the option of running or walking outside due to safety concerns or your schedule, you can find videos online that have full walking programs incorporated – you’ll walk and do a variety of other steps in place.
  • Strength training: You don’t have to be a serious weightlifter to incorporate strength training into your routine. Simple bodyweight movements like planks, modified push ups (push ups done on your knees), lunges, and bodyweight squats are exercises you can incorporate into any routine. Aim to strength train two to three times per week, rotating between upper body and lower body exercises. Doing so will help you build muscle and focus on the total body strength training rather than one focus area. 
  • Flexibility: Yoga and simple stretching are great ways to increase your flexibility, and there are many beginner yoga videos available online that can help guide you through the routine. Stretching and yoga are low impact, so you can do these activities five to seven times per week. You’ll want to hold each stretch for up to 30 seconds to get the most out of it.

If you find yourself struggling to get motivated to exercise, you’ve probably thrown out every excuse in the book.
